What We Study In First Grade

Focus on Reader Response Journal
Student Choice for Book Buckets
Mini lessons teach reading strategies and comprehension skills.
Teacher meets with book groups, or 1 on 1 with students
Students follow a Writing Diamond which contains:
Beginning (Characters and Setting)
Middle (First, Next, Then, Finally)
End (I remember, I hope, I feel)
Students will start to write using their senses. Using vivid "WOW" words in writing help them to take a "Snap Shot" and make their writing some alive on paper!
We also will be teaching students the following:
Informational Writing (students write like an expert and inform or explain something)
Opinion Writing (an elementary type of argument where students write reasons for something)
Some of what we will learn this year is:
-Addition/Subtraction within 20
-2 digit addition
-Non standard measurement
-Numbers to 120
Math Facts: As part of on going homework, students should practice addition and subtraction facts nightly.
In Science we use the 5 senses to practice observing and recording accurately. We incorporate the new NGSS standards for Science which using Guided Inquiry based learning.
-Seasonal Patterns (Moon, Sun, Stars)
-Animal and Plant Adaptation,
Traits, Structure & Function.
-Light, Sound and Shadow
Students enjoy working with Susan Michael our Outdoor Education Specialist. We take monthly hikes with her observing the woods on our Wolf Tree Trail.

*Families, Traditions, Heritage- Discussion of families around the world, how they are similar, and different from ours. Our culminating activity is our One World Celebration (April).
